Bright eyes

I’m not normally colour shy. I love bright pumps or bold statement jewelry or a vivid silk top as much as the next girl. But tinted mascaras always seemed a bit strange to me. Why would I want blue eyelashes? But thanks to a recent Almay beauty product launch event, I’m a convert! Find out what a makeup artist said to me to make me change my mind.

Reading Diary: Feeling exposed

While it might seem calculated, it’s not. On Thursday I thought I would post links to the interesting articles I read that day. And this morning I was trying to think of a post title, when I found that each of these stories – although each very, very different – are about exposing something. Not all are deep and reflective, but I was intrigued all the same.
• Writer Jowita Bydlowska interviews a therapist and gets questioned.
The title says it all. This needs to be exposed. Don’t do it ladies!
• More people have diabetes than you would think. I don’t know about you, but that figure shocked me – more than 1 in 10 people.
• I absolutely love these photos. They’re beautiful, raw and honest.

As seen in Glow: Ask a health editor

What is the latest celebrity diet?
It was big news in January when Gwyneth Paltrow announced on her blog Goop that she wasn’t doing a New Year’s cleanse. I let out a sigh of relief. Without Gwynnie doing a detox, I suddenly felt less guilty about not doing one myself. Read more about how stars are now dieting.

Werk it: #almaypretty

Blue steel / #almaypretty #stolentwitpic with @emiliedingfeld

Tonight my Glow colleague and pal Emilie Dingfeld and I went to the Almay spring launch party. We were shown the new CC Cream, the new packaging for its makeup removers (one has hair nourishing ingredients for eyelashes), and new moisturizing lip glosses. There was lots of new! We were also treated to a makeover, where my lovely makeup artist used the Intense Eye Colour shadows for my blue peepers. She actually told me my skin was phenomenal. My life is complete. A tea party with makeup, makeovers and a photo booth. That's a good time!

I gotta go!

Would you leave your wedding to go to work?

This reporter did, as an earth quake in China shook up her nuptials. Here she interviews streeters in her gown. She is awesome. I hope to be writing or editing on my big day.

Ombré

Ombré is full on in beauty and fashion right now. Fashion seems obvious, with the bleached outjeans and gradual-hued sun dresses we saw last summer. I love how now we’re seeing it with more personality, more courage, and more style.

As for beauty, it makes so much sense to play with colour from the tips of your hair to your lips. While generally I wouldn’t recommend doing a trend all over, but this one is too much fun to resist. Which is why I’m wearing this Boohoo.com denim shirt with my L’Oréal Féria hair.
Here’s my Glow magazine colleague Tania Kwong demonstrating how to to do the ombré lip. Enjoy!

Princess Shiny Locks

Every time I see photos of Kate Middleton (a.k.a. Princess Shiny Locks), I think about the hair I used to have in my teens and in my 20s. I had thick, naturally wavy hair that was manageable and easy to straighten and could hold curls. I wouldn’t bat an eye at a trim or a cropped ’do. “It’s just hair – it’ll grow back!” I said. That’s how I used to think. Read more on glow.ca to find out how I am thickening up my locks on.

It’s fishy, but it’s good

We’ve been on a bit of a fish kick lately. And one way to ensure we’re getting enough of those good fats from our piscine friends is to get into a dietary routine. So every Tuesday we’re having fish tacos. Get it? Taco Tuesday.
The recipe is very simple and it’s super easy to make. We buy two fresh fillets of halibut; bake it in the over on 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Because we’re putting them in tacos, the fish should be flaky and fall apart. Then we put it in corn taco shells, top it with coleslaw and voila. You can add salsa, but I find the texture and tang of the coleslaw is enough for my taste buds. We have it for the two of us, but it could easily feed three to four. Here’s the recipe: Enjoy!

Ingredients:
2 pieces (about 300 g each) halibut, boneless skinless
Spritz olive oil
1 bag (350 g) shredded cabbage
2 heaping tbsp real mayonnaise or coleslaw dressing (or Veganase if you’re Gwynnie)
8 small soft corn tacos (I prefer corn over tortilla wraps because it adds a bit of colour)

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray baking sheet with olive oil. I also line the paper with tinfoil to make cleanup easier. Place fish on baking sheet and cook for about 10 minutes. It should be flaky and easily beaks apart. Turn over, and cook for another 5 to 10 minutes, until desired texture. Break up fish pieces and put in a bowl with a serving spoon.
Meanwhile, put cabbage in a bowl and add mayo or dressing. Mix well.
To serve, place bowls of coleslaw, fish and corn tacos on table ready to assemble.

Bon appetit!

Pop! Pop! Fizz! Fizz!

I’d already done cupcakes. Gourmet donuts, too. But I wanted to treat the guests at our engagement party to something new. Something they’d be surprised by. After perusing Pinterest for some party ideas, it was decided: A popcorn bar.
I love, love popcorn. Knowing this, a few years ago my boyfriend bought me the Great Northern Popcorn Company Little Bambino popcorn popper. My colour theme would be red to match the popper.

For the paper cones, I printed the ‘save the date’ on white sheets of paper, rolled them with red or black construction paper, and then taped them with washi tape (decorative Japanese masking tape) I found on etsy.com. Also, if you google how to make the cones, I found the instructions not very helpful. Instead do what I did: Roll one corner over to the middle of the other side and hold it there as you tightly roll the bottom. Tape the top first to secure it, and then tape the bottom. I found that using regular tape and then covering it with the washi tape was stronger than the washi alone.

For the popcorn seasonings, I had earnest intentions of making the spice blends myself. After searching for different flavourings, I found myself on bulkbarn.ca. There were tons of popcorn seasonings. What I lacked in the kitchen I made up with naming the flavours.
Sour cream & onion ==> Sour cream of the crop!
Dill pickle ==> I’m pickled
Vanilla sugar ==> Birthday cake
Movie theatre style ==> His BUTTER half
Cinnamon sugar ==> Cinnamon toast
Popcorners White Cheddar ==> White (cheddar) dress
Barbecue popcorn seasoning ==> Such a JERK!
Many guests used more than one shaker and created their own popcorn concoctions. I’m told that Cinnamon toast and Birthday cake were best when combined.

For the bottles, I just picked up a bunch of salt shakers from the dollar store, along with some ribbon, plastic bowls and matching scoops, and gingham and polka-dot napkins. I put the cones in a galvanized bucket, the kernels in a white bowl, and olive oil in a mason jar. I displayed the shakers on a picture frame I bought at a church bazaar sale. The measuring spoons were set out so guests could make their own popcorn. One guest told me that she loved the smell of the popcorn when she entered the house.
In addition to all of this, we also had a ton of different cheeses – 14 to be exact – that were picked up from the Hamilton Farmers Market. I wanted them to be cheese people had never heard of or tasted before. From coconut to mango, from extra-extra old to hot chili, the cheeses were meant to spark conversations among our guests about the types they tried, and encourage others to do the same. There was also some fresh and dried fruit to change up the palette. We had so much fun, and are thankful for everyone who came (and those who were thinking of us and who couldn’t make it). We feel the love.

Behind the scenes

Hair & makeup prep for today’s @glowcanada photo shoot #bts #behindthescenes

This afternoon I was working with the super creative Joanna Kam from Glow, as well as makeup artist Patrick Ramé. They are both great to have on set, since they always have a good laugh and are very sweet. Here you see Patrick doing some serious contouring on our beautiful model. But you will just have to wait until the issue comes out to see it! I don't want to give everything away. Let me just say your arms will love this workout challenge. Stay tuned until September!

Good jeans

I can never pass up a denim shirt. Heavy-weight cotton. Thin chambray. It doesn’t matter. While I might be ruining a good Neil Diamond song: I’d much rather be forever in a blue jean shirt.

As Seen in Glow: Me!

I had such a blast on set for this runway to real-way beauty story. I got to “model” the metallic eye look. When I was told that that would be my trend, I was a bit apprehensive. Metallics can make wrinkles on lids more prominent. But I learned it’s all in where you put the shadows. Thanks to Maybelline’s Grace Lee for making me feel pretty. XO

Check it out in the April issue of Glow, and in our Spring Beauty Report.

Beautiful People: Jowita Bydlowska

Fast forward to 1:15
“I’ll never understand it. You’re so bright, charming and beautiful. I think to myself: What problems could you possibly have?”
You never know what is going on in people’s lives. That rang true for me when my good friend and colleague turned 30 some years ago and I gave her a present that was completely inappropriate.
She is one of those people who is unassumingly cool. Jowita Bydlowska has the beauty of a fashion model, the wit of a sharp-tongued barman (very observant and always spot-on), and a knack for writing that gives you chills because it’s like she’s inside your mind. She was celebrating her big 3-0 at the back room of a small bar in Toronto. So when I came across a French bottle of red wine that was decadently rich and dressed with a gorgeous label, I had to buy it for her.
Days later, I got a sweet email. Jowita wrote me to thank me for the thoughtful gift (I had thought it was, too) and to let me know that she gave it to her partner because she doesn’t drink anymore. We were good friends, and I should know. I felt like Michael Kane’s character, Elliot, in “Hannah & Her Sisters,” a 1986 film by Woody Allen. When he happens to run into Lee, played by Barbara Hershey, on her way to an AA meeting, he says to her that she is far too beautiful and smart to have a drinking problem.
Alcoholism has many stigmas, and some of them are true… with some people. It’s not always obvious. Not all sit in a bar for hours, are too drunk to go to work, get caught drunk driving or destroy their relationships with family and friends. Alcoholism can affect those who seem to have it all together.
I’m very proud of Jowita for overcoming such a challenging time, and also for including such honesty in her new book Drunk Mom, which launches April 24th.
It’s tough to write about yourself. I’m finding that with this blog even. And I’m writing about silly things like what I ate that day, clothes I want to buy and planning a self-indulgent wedding. There’s that constant thought of how I will appear to a reader, what will they think, and the worry I might offend them. In real life it doesn’t seem to matter – whoever will like me will like me, and those who don’t, oh well. With the written word, it’s a game of editing and pulling yourself out and then putting yourself back in. I’m in awe of Jowita. And also, I wanted to know how she did it. So I asked her.
How did you start writing about yourself? Isn’t that hard to do? I personally find it difficult and edit myself so much that I wonder how authentic I sounds.
“A personal story is just as important as any story – all stories are human and represent common experiences, even if they’re told via personal prism. And distance is absolutely necessary – in terms of ‘Drunk Mom,’ I know that this is my memoir but now it’s a story even to me and although I identify with the main character I’m not that person anymore today. I believe that any human being  can evolve.
“Authenticity is tricky since, as a writer, you need to be very disciplined with the personal stories you intend to publish, tighten them, tweak, copy edit. Otherwise you’re writing a journal and who wants to read that? Well, unless you’re John Cheever.”
How much of the writing the writing you do is for readers and how much of it is for yourself? Who do you write for?
“The writing that I love, such as personal essays and fiction, is always for me, in that I write what I personally would like to read. You can’t be authentic if you write to the audience. And I mean ‘to,’ not ‘for’ because you always write ‘for’ if you do decide to publish.”
Do you read your own work later?
“I read all my stuff again while making revisions and it hurts. Once stuff gets published I might read it once but most likely not. I seriously want to puke every time I read something I wrote long time ago. So I try not to read that stuff.”
What will your next book be about?
“It’s called ‘Why Women Love Me’ and it’s a novel about sex and twisted love. It can be described as reverse ‘50 Shades of Grey’ meets ‘American Psycho.’ ‘Why Women Love Me’ is a novel that’s from the point of view of a misogynistic man. I’m also working on my Canadian novel called ‘The Atonement of Harry Madder’ and I’ve a long-term project called ‘Wolf Girls’ – a sci-fi novel about a tribe of warrior women in a post-apocalyptic world.”
You must be the most honest person. Are you?
“No.”

Sparkling moon

This is the result of nail envy. It would seem that all of the Canadian beauty editors get their nails done at Tips Nail Bar in Toronto. If I compliment a colleague’s nails, I know what she is going to say. She went to Tips. They’ve worked with Revlon for events and fashion shows (ahem, Lucian Matis). I was once invited to get my nails done there by a lacquer brand, but it was on my birthday. I have yet to make it there. But my jealous nails, after a basic manicure with Dior’s Gris Trianon (a colour recco by Glow’s beauty editor), wanted some glam, some shine, a moon manicure. I took inspiration from a recent Tips moon mani. Instead of the nude moon, I went for Nars Silver Factory, which is part of the Andy Warhol collection. I simply used the Essence French Manicure Tip Guides, by placing the strips about half a centimetre from my cuticle. Too much polish can run under the guide, so I was careful to apply two thin coats, peel the sticker away and finish with a top coat. It’s my cheap and chic delay until I finally get my tips into Tips.

Raise the barre

Looking to advance your at-home workout? Paulina Witkowski, a trainer and instructor at Barreworks in Toronto, offers up three challenging barre moves. But don’t be scared. These are low-impact moves that reallytarget the muscles through isolating and controlled movements. “They target those small, stabilizing muscles that aren’t usually targeted in other workouts,” says Witkowski, who’s been a dancer for 20 years. “It’s not a dance class – it’s a real workout!”
