Wedding music

This morning, while he’s playing Hearts on his phone and I’m reading Jezebel.com, I tell him that we should start thinking about our wedding music. He asks me what my favourite song is. I think I’m voted off DJ duty.

Crayons!

As a kid, I loved to colour. I loved my crayons. It appears nothing has changed. Just look at the latest inclusions in my makeup bag.
And why should it? Crayons make sense. They’re easy to hold. They are injected with a beautiful ribbon of colour. Even in makeup form.
I can imagine the creative meeting in the slick boardroom of a cosmetic company. They’ve decided that makeup is fun and playful, so it makes sense to encourage shoppers (like myself) to get into that child-like mindset of playing with makeup the way we would with crayons. Clink martini glasses and back to their desks.
It’s more than eyeliner that has gotten the Crayola-treatment. Lipsticks and eye shadows have taken on this new-ish form. While I’m sure there are others, the first time I noticed it was with Clinique Chubby Sticks, about two years ago. Then came the Revlon version a bit later. But now it’s a crayonmageddon! Here are a few new colouring book-inspired cosmetics.

Part balm, part stain, this lipstick packs on some serious colour. Here it’s shown in (L to R) Tangerine Dream, Party Pink and Rave Red. It’s a high-impact lip that’s suitable for day or night, IMHO.

Generally I have better luck with liquid eyeliner pens. But this chunky pencil goes on smoothly and accurately. Here it is shown in an earthy dark brown, Terra. Winged tip, here I come!

You know how you sometimes look at your closet and have nothing to wear? I’ve done that with my makeup bag. These bright shadows are a cheap and chic pick-me-up. With almost no pressure, I line the top of my eye for an opaque hit of colour that’s got a bit of shine. Here are (L to R) Gossip Green, Guilty Grey (Thanks for spelling it with an E, Rimmel), Tempting Turquoise and Paranoid Purple.

This next one is not new, but it’s definitely an honourable mention:

The Body Shop Kajal Eyeliner, $??
This was a special edition that I want to come back! Some have blogged that it’s now selling in Asia and you can find it on Ebay. Here’s hoping that it’s a hint it might get relaunched on this side of the ocean. Unlike the other crayon-inspired makeup, the encasing on this one is a retractable lipstick container. With some shine, this liner goes on similarly to the eyeshadows and can be blended.
Heck, why not read more. Here are three published beauty stories of mine:

What's BRCA1?

Angelina Jolie’s announcement today about her double mastectomy is a shocking one. In a piece she wrote for the New York Times, “My Medical Choice,”  she tells the ordeal she went through, discovering that she inherited the gene BRCA1, which gave her an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer, and a 50 percent chance for ovarian cancer. Here’s what you should know about the gene.

Queen of Quinoa

There are days when I give in to what’s left in the fridge as my dinner. Usually it’s like a mental cleanse for me. I don’t want to spend more money. I don’t want to drive to the grocery store. And, frankly, I’m tired of throwing food out. (My boyfriend, for some reason, thinks that the two of us equal an army and will cook too much food and he ends up hoarding containers of chicken, pasta, soup and whatever else we at that week in the refrigerator.) So the other day I challenged him to make something out what we’ve already got. “You do it,” said. Fine! The challenge was mine, apparently.

We’ve had a bag of quinoa in our pantry for some time but have never had the occasion to use it. But with my heels to the ground on making a meal out of food we’ve already got, the trendy grain was now my base. A bag of mini sweet peppers would be the vessel and some shredded cheese would top it all off: spicy quinoa stuffed peppers. I would also get to use some of the spices we have, too.

Here’s what I did:

8 mini sweet peppers, stem and seeds removed

1 cup quinoa, cooked according to package instructions

Spices, as desired (I used pinches of salt, pepper, garlic powder and red pepper flakes, but you can use whatever you like!)

8 tsp and 2 tbsp shredded cheese, divided (I liked the strong cheddar to compliment the spices I used.)

NOTE: Now I have to warn you, with this recipe you will have quinoa left over. So the next day, because of the spices I included in the quinoa mixture, I made it into a quesadilla for my lunch. If you don’t want leftovers, use half the amount.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a large bowl, add the spices and mix well. Taste as you add so you can get the desired flavour you want from your quinoa stuffing. Add 2 tbsp of shredded cheese and mix well. The cheese will melt and make it easy for you to spoon the quinoa mixture into the peppers.

Meanwhile, grab a muffin pan and wrap it with aluminum foil, ensuring that the foil goes into the muffin cups. This works better than a baking sheet as it will help the bumpy-bottom peppers stand instead of toppling over. Once you’ve wrapped it well, begin to stuff the peppers using a spoon. You can be generous with your stuffing, and let it form a peak in the pepper. Do this to all eight peppers. Top each pepper with chese, making sure that it covers both the quinoa and the pepper.

Bake in oven until cheese melts, about 15 minutes. Then turn on broil, for about 2 minutes, until the tops of the peppers are a golden-brown. Serve as a side dish or as a meal.

Let me know if you make this and what spices you used. I’d love to be inspired to do this one again.

What will the last 10 years of your life be like?

I find the most powerful PSAs are more about empowerment than fear mongering. And this is a great example of getting people to think about their health instead of being afraid of it.

My balayage

Have you heard of balayage? Before this video I hadn’t. But when Glow needed someone to get the highlights for a video, I raised my hand like a kid in class who knew the answer. After a quick google of the term, pictures of Jessica Alba and Rachel Bilson appeared. Yes, please. I’d love to look like either. The video is featured on Glow.ca’s homepage.
